Ecstasy A work in progress theatre piece based on the classical play “The Bacchae” by Euripides. Presented at Theatro Technis in London on Friday, May 4th 2007. The last and finest, according to a lot of theatre scholars, tragedy of Euripides is an extremely complex play dealing with such major conflicts as: the rational Vs the irrational, the “known” Vs the “other”, male Vs female, nature Vs civilization, order Vs chaos. In our adaptation, the story acts out in a modern metropolis. One of the greatest of all Greek tragedies, The Bacchae powerfully dramatizes the conflict between the emotional and rational sides of the human psyche. Adapted and directed by: Christos Prossylis. Assistant director: Filia Delagrammatika. Translation into English: Maria Karolidou. Video art, multimedia art installation and sound ambient: Christos Prossylis
CAST (in alphabetical order) Carmen Cuvelier (Cadmus), Maria Karolidou (Pentheus), Marilena Papapericleous (Messenger, Servant), Miguel Pinheiro (Dionysus, Teiresias), Eria Sainio (Agave), Carolin Wagner (Chorus Leader)
SYNOPSIS Dionysus, god of wine and theatre, has arrived in his birthplace, the modern metropolis of Thebes. Pentheus confines Dionysus, but he escapes and, drawing the king into the mountains to spy on the women's ecstatic revels, maenads in ecstasy and his mother Agave will kill Pentheus. Dionysus establishes his religion whipping off and a terrible revenge on Pentheus and all the people of Thebes.
